Crouser: ‘Shot Put in the heart of the city is a great idea!’

Thursday the Final of the Diamond League Shot Put will be taking place at Place de la Monnaie in Brussels. American Ryan Crouser, one of the favourites, is very excited about “urban athletics” !

“This is the third time this year that I will be competing in a competition outside the stadium. The Shot Put is very suitable for that because we don’t need a lot of place. City events like these are exciting. They attract new fans and that is good for the event and for the sports. To compete one day earlier is also great. We are now the headliners of the day, while on the next day we’re just one of 15 events.”

“Urban athletics” also allows more interaction with the fans. I remember a competition in New Zealand where some tall guys were picked from the spectators to try and put the Shot as far as possible. They didn’t throw any further than 11m to 13m. It was impressive for them and for the audience to see us throw then beyond 20 meters.”

This Thursday in Brussels strong boys and girls from the audience will also be invited to throw the shot. Starting at 3:00 p.m. we will be looking for the strongest Belgian (amateur) shot putters. All those who are interested can give it a try ! The Diamond League Final starts at 5:00 p.m.
Ryan Crouser was dominating in the Diamond Race and is one of the favourites next Thursday. The World Championships didn’t turn out well for the American, he even finished outside the medals. “I am one of the tallest figures on the circuit and it is difficult for me to get my timing and my rhythm right in the (small) circle. In London it was awful, I completely messed up my technique. It was a pity because physically I was probably in the best shape of my life. Last week I threw 22.35m again in Portugal, so I am getting my technique right again. It’s time for revenge. Winning the Diamond League is an important target to me.”
