Carter (30) recorded a distance of 19m98, which was by far the biggest result of the afternoon. Double Olympic champion Adams (19m57) and Hungary’s Anita Marton (19m11) were second and third, replicating the exact podium of the Rio Olympics, where Carter also beat Adams to the Olympic gold medal. Local favourite Jolien Boumkwo was ninth with 15m99.

Instead of the mighty King Baudouin Stadium, the shot put competition took place the day before the actual event on a packed Grand Place, the beating heart of Brussels. The athletes clearly enjoyed this unique change of environment. “This is by far the most beautiful location I have ever competed at,” said an excited Michelle Carter. "It was pure fun. I love Brussels!
“It’s a fantastic setting for shot putting, it was very special," Valerie Adams agreed. "What a big, enthusiastic crowd as well, they were amazing! Getting to play our own songs during our attempts gave us an energy boost too. It was brilliant!"
