Memorial painting makes a link to the World Championships and to Tia Hellebaut

With the World Championships in Athletics taking place in Moscow later this year, the organisers elected a Russian artist to make this year’s painting : Natacha Ivanova. Ivanova was born in St Petersburg en earned a degree at the Academy of Fine Arts in her hometown.

She then moved to Paris where she continued her development at the famous Ecole Nationale Supérieure des Beaux-Arts. With her fairy tale-like and complex paintings she caught attention and soon she started to win awards and prizes.

It is not Ivanova’s first experience in the area of sports. Already in 1999 she was invited by the Tour de France and allowed herself to embed in the race and express her feelings through her paintings. The initial goal of making 20 paintings ended up in a collection of no less than 600 paintings, drawings and studies on the Tour de France. To the extent that Ivanova suffered from a tendinitis in her right hand …

The Memorial painting shows a high jumper. Not a coincidence since the Belgacom Memorial Van Damme will be honoring Tia Hellebaut who has retired from the sports this year.

In Belgium Natacha Ivanova is represented by the NK Gallery in Antwerp that is run by a Russian immigrant and her husband from Antwerp.
