Ibrahim Jeilan, the newly crowned world champion on the 10,000m, will also take part in the Belgacom Memorial Van Damme. He wants to add to his world title a world best year performance in Brussels.
Earlier this week the Ethiopian Jeilan rather surprisingly won the 10000m. After a tactical race, he placed a tremendous acceleration in the final stretch to capture the gold medal in 27:13.81, ahead of Mo Farah from Britain. It was precisely Farah who was the fastest on the 10,000m this year; in Eugene he managed a time of 26:46.57. A time that Jeilan eyes for the Memorial.
The Belgacom Memorial Van Damme has a long tradition in the men’s 10km. The world record by Kenenisa Bekele has been established in the King Baudouin stadium in 2005. No other athlete came near the time of 26:17.53 ever since.
The Belgacom Memorial Van Damme takes place Friday, 16 September at the King Baudouin stadium in Brussels. A few thousand tickets are still remaining. You can book tickets online or by calling 02 478 20 25.
